Knockout Tournaments
Set up single elimination, double elimination, and group-stage knockout tournaments with bracket visualization and automatic progression.
Prerequisites
Before setting up a knockout tournament, you need:
- A group with teams created
- Admin or Owner role in the group
Balla Stats supports multiple tournament formats to match any competition structure. Choose the format that best fits your needs.
Single Elimination
One loss and you are out. The simplest knockout format.
Double Elimination
Teams must lose twice to be eliminated. More forgiving.
Group + Knockout
Group stage followed by elimination rounds.
Swiss System
Teams with similar records play each round. No elimination.
- Create a knockout tournament
- Choose the right format
- View and understand brackets
- Handle penalties and extra time
- Automatic winner progression
- Set up group stage + knockout
Start by creating a new season with the Tournament or Cup type.
- 1Go to your group's Seasons tab
- 2Click "Create Season"
- 3Select "Tournament" or "Cup" as the season type
- 4Fill in the tournament name, start date, and other details
Select the elimination format that best suits your competition.
Single Elimination
- Ideal for quick tournaments with limited time
- Number of matches = number of teams minus 1
- Best with power-of-2 team counts (4, 8, 16, 32)
Double Elimination
- Teams get a second chance after their first loss
- Winners bracket and losers bracket run in parallel
- Grand final between winners bracket champion and losers bracket champion
Group Stage + Knockout
- Teams play round-robin within groups first
- Top teams from each group advance to knockout stage
- Combines the fairness of groups with the excitement of knockouts
For weekend tournaments with 8 or fewer teams, single elimination is the fastest format. For larger events where fairness matters, consider group stage + knockout.
Add participating teams and optionally set their seeding to control bracket placement.
- 1Click "Add Teams" on the tournament page
- 2Select the participating teams from your group
- 3Set seeding numbers to control bracket placement (Seed 1 vs last seed, etc.)
- 4Click "Save" to confirm
Bracket Sizes
For single and double elimination, brackets work best with power-of-2 team counts (4, 8, 16, 32). If your team count is not a power of 2, some teams will receive first-round byes.
Generate the tournament bracket to create the fixture schedule.
- 1Click "Generate Fixtures" on the tournament page
- 2Configure the start date and days between rounds
- 3Review the generated bracket structure
- 4Activate the season when ready to play
Viewing the Bracket
The bracket visualization shows the complete tournament structure:
- All rounds from first round to the final
- Team names and scores for completed matches
- Highlighted winners advancing to the next round
- TBD placeholders for upcoming matchups
You can manually edit fixture details like dates and venues using the Fixture Management tools after generating the bracket.
Start playing matches. Winners automatically advance to the next round in the bracket.
No Draws Allowed
Knockout matches cannot end in a draw. Extra time is automatically enabled for all knockout matches. If the match is still tied after extra time, a penalty shootout determines the winner.
Penalty Shootout Process
When a knockout match is tied after extra time:
- 1. Click "Record Penalties" on the match page
- 2. Enter each penalty kick result (scored or missed)
- 3. Complete a minimum of 5 penalties per team
- 4. Continue with sudden death if still tied
- 5. The system records the penalty score and marks the winner
Automatic Progression
When a match is completed, the winner automatically advances to the next round in the bracket. The bracket visualization updates in real time.
Double elimination gives every team a second chance. The tournament runs two parallel brackets:
Winners Bracket
Teams that have not lost yet. Losing moves you to the losers bracket.
Losers Bracket
Teams that have lost once. Losing again means elimination.
Grand Final
The winners bracket champion plays the losers bracket champion. If the winners bracket team loses, a deciding match may be played since they would have only one loss.
This format combines a round-robin group stage with a knockout phase. It is used by major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup.
- 1Set up groups with teams distributed evenly
- 2Each team plays every other team in their group (round-robin)
- 3Top teams from each group advance to the knockout stage
- 4Knockout stage proceeds with single elimination
Configure the number of teams that advance from each group. Typically the top 2 from each group qualify for the knockout stage.
Use Standard Bracket Sizes
Use 4, 8, 16, or 32 teams for clean brackets without byes. If you have an odd number, add a bye team.
Play Round by Round
Complete all matches in one round before moving to the next for a clean tournament flow.
Communicate Rules Early
Let teams know the format, extra time rules, and penalty procedures before the tournament starts.
Share the Bracket
Use the public sharing feature to share the bracket with all participants and spectators.
Can't Generate Bracket
- Ensure at least 2 teams are added to the tournament
- Check that you have admin or owner permissions
- For double elimination, at least 4 teams are recommended
Winner Not Advancing
- The match must have status COMPLETED (not just ended)
- Knockout matches cannot end in a draw
- If tied after extra time, record a penalty shootout
- Try refreshing the page to see updated bracket
Match Ending in a Draw
- Enable extra time in the match settings
- Use the penalty shootout feature if still tied after extra time
- Knockout matches must have a winner to progress
