Penalty Shootouts & Extra Time
Learn how knockout matches are resolved in Balla Stats, including extra time periods and penalty shootout recording.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- A Balla Stats account
- Admin or Owner role in your group
- A knockout match (Cup or Tournament) with extra time enabled
In knockout competitions, matches must have a winner. Balla Stats supports the standard progression: regular time, extra time, and penalty shootouts to determine a winner when scores are level.
Extra Time
Two 15-minute halves (30 min total)
Penalty Shootout
Best of 5, then sudden death
Winner Determination
Clear result for tournament progression
- Understand knockout match rules
- Handle extra time periods
- Record a penalty shootout
- Understand result notation (AET, Penalties)
- Handle tied knockout matches
Knockout matches in Cup and Tournament seasons cannot end in a draw. The system enforces this automatically:
How It Works
- 1Extra time is automatically enabled for Cup and Tournament matches
- 2If the score is level after 90 minutes, extra time begins
- 3If still level after extra time, a penalty shootout is required
League matches can end in a draw. Knockout rules only apply to Cup and Tournament match types.
If the scores are level at the end of regular time in a knockout match:
- 1The system will prompt you to continue to extra time
- 2Extra time consists of two 15-minute halves (90'-105' and 105'-120')
- 3Record any goals scored during extra time normally
- 4If still tied after extra time, the penalty shootout option appears
Extra Time Periods
- First half of extra time: 90' to 105'
- Short break between extra time halves
- Second half of extra time: 105' to 120'
When a penalty shootout is needed, use the penalty dialog:
- 1Click the "Record Penalty Shootout" button
- 2Record each penalty kick round by round
- 3Mark each penalty as scored or missed for both teams
- 4The system tracks the running total automatically

The penalty shootout follows standard football rules:
Shootout Rules
- 1Each team takes 5 penalties (minimum)
- 2If one team has an unassailable lead, the shootout ends early
- 3If tied after 5 rounds, sudden death penalties continue until a winner is decided

Record penalties accurately as they happen. The system will automatically detect when a winner has been determined.
After extra time or penalties, the result is displayed with clear notation:
Won in Extra Time
Score shows: 3-2 (AET)
AET = After Extra Time
Won on Penalties
Score shows: 2-2 (4-3 on pens)
Shows match score and penalty score
Example Notations
- Team A 3-2 Team B (AET) - Won in extra time with a 3-2 scoreline
- Team A 1-1 Team B (4-2 pens) - Drew 1-1, Team A won 4-2 on penalties
- Team A 0-0 Team B (3-1 pens) - Goalless draw, Team A won 3-1 on penalties
